Apr 26,  · A great and wonderful album is the kora duet project with Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, New Ancient Strings (Hannibal ; ). This album takes its name from a recording of the same name, performed by these younger generation kora players’ fathers, Sidiki Diabate and Djelimadi Sissoko. Reply

Toumani Diabate, scion of one of Mali's oldest hereditary musical dynasties, was born into a few-centuries-worth of hard-acts-to-follow. But his output continues his father Sidiki's life-long exploration of the manifold possibilities of the kora, West Africa's glorious string harp-lute/5(32). Reply

Toumani Diabate (born Mali, ) recorded what happened to be the first solo kora record purely instrumental: Kaira (Hannibal Records, ); he also played with the kora player Ballake Sissoko (New Ancient Strings - Nouvelles Cordes Anciennes, Hannibal Records, a tribute to their fathers record issued in ) and with Keletigui Diabate. More than 20 years later, their sons, the now world-famous Toumani Diabate and the junior Ballake Sissoko, have come together to pay tribute to their fathers with 's New Ancient Strings. While many of the songs come from the original repertoire, the music is all modern Mali/5(34). Reply

First published in , this CD was the first album totally devoted to the kora. Sidiki Diabaté was the father of Toumani Diabaté, and Djelimadi Sissoko was the father of Ballaké Sissoko. They both recorded New Ancient Strings - Nouvelles Cordes Anciennes in (Hannibal), as a tribute to their fathers. Reply

Oct 11,  · Ballake Sissoko – Photo by Benoit Peverelli. The sound of Ballake Sissoko’s string kora identifies him, along with Toumani Diabate, as one of the best kora players of a new generation of musicians in Mali. His concerts with Taj Mahal’s Kulanjan project brought him international attention. Reply

Apr 06,  · New Ancient Strings is a collaboration between Toumani Diabaté and Ballaké Sissoko, two great kora players that play great together. The kora is a massive 21 string harp made from gourd, cowhide, and wood that is widely used in West Africa. Reply
